Add an extra port to your server
Published on 3 October 2026
Some plugins need a port of their own, next to your game’s port. Think of Simple Voice Chat, the BlueMap web map or Geyser for Bedrock players. Under Network in the game panel you add an extra port yourself, as long as your plan has room for one.
What do you need an extra port for?
A port is a door into your server. Your game uses one, and a plugin that receives its own traffic, such as voice chat or a web map, needs another. A plugin that only works inside your game doesn’t need its own port.
How do you add an extra port?
- Open your server in the game panel and go to Network, under the Actions heading.
- At the bottom you can see how many ports you use, for example
Using 1 of 2 allocations. - Click Create Allocation. The game panel picks a free port on the same IP address.
- Type what the port is for under Add notes, for example
voicechat. Handy once you have more of them. - Point your plugin at the new port number and restart your server.
Each port gets its own card, with the full address under Full Address. The port your game runs on is labelled Primary. An extra port has a Make Primary button and a bin icon to delete it.
How do you point a plugin at the port?
| Plugin | File | Setting |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Voice Chat | plugins/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties | port= your extra port |
| Geyser | plugins/Geyser-Spigot/config.yml | under bedrock: port: your extra port |
| BlueMap | plugins/BlueMap/webserver.conf | port: your extra port |
With Simple Voice Chat your friends don’t need to do anything; their mod gets the port from your server. Bedrock players using Geyser enter the IP address and the extra port. BlueMap is explained step by step in A live web map of your world with BlueMap, and Geyser in Java and Bedrock together.
What are the common mistakes?
- Leaving the plugin’s default port. That port isn’t yours, so the plugin won’t start or nobody can reach it. Always use the port from Network.
- Clicking Make Primary by accident. Your game then moves to that port on the next start, while your friends still use the old address. Set the right port back to Primary.
- Setting voice chat to port
-1. It then shares your server’s port. The Simple Voice Chat makers warn this can clash with your server’s query; a separate port is more reliable. - Forgetting to restart. Plugins only read their port on startup.
