Project Zomboid is the zombie survival game by The Indie Stone. You try to survive for as long as possible in Knox County. Build 42 became the stable version on 29 July 2026, with multiplayer, animals, basements and a reworked map. On your own server you decide how hard it gets, and your world keeps existing even when nobody is playing.
How much RAM does a Project Zomboid server need?
Memory grows with the number of players and above all with how much of the map you explore: every loaded area costs memory. Our advice: CupCake 4 GB for a small group on a fresh world, Cake 6 GB or BIGCake 8 GB for a bigger group or a world that has been running for weeks, and SuperCake 12 GB for lots of players with a long mod list.
How do mods work on Build 42?
Mods come from the Steam Workshop. In your server’s configuration file you put the Workshop IDs under WorkshopItems and the mod IDs under Mods; players download them automatically when they connect. Not every Build 41 mod works on Build 42, so check on the Workshop page which build a mod supports.
What can you change in the panel?
In the Startup tab you choose the server name and the admin username and password. Want a different version? Enter a branch under Steam Beta Branch and reinstall the server; make a backup first. Zombies, loot and how quickly the world decays are set in your server’s sandbox settings. Restart after every change, and always make a backup before a big update: a bitten character won’t come back, but a world can. How restoring works is in Create and restore a backup.
