ARK: Survival Evolved is the original ARK by Studio Wildcard. On 30 September 2023 the official servers went offline, shortly before Survival Ascended arrived. Since then, you play the original ARK online on community servers or on a server of your own. Plenty of groups stay with this version for the familiar maps and the mods from the Steam Workshop.
How much RAM does an ARK server need?
Our ARK: Survival Evolved plans start at 6 GB. That is enough for a small tribe on a standard map. With lots of mods, a big map or more players, go for BIGCake 8 GB or SuperCake 12 GB; for heavy mod lists and big communities there is MegaCake 16 GB.
How do mods work?
Mods come from the Steam Workshop. You put the mod IDs under Mods in the Startup tab, separated by commas; the server downloads them itself when it starts. Players download the same mods when they connect. Working with a long mod list? Add mods in small batches, so you quickly spot which one causes trouble.
What can you change in the panel?
In Startup you choose the server name, the map, the maximum number of players, the passwords, BattlEye and automatic updates, and you can add extra launch options. Taming, harvesting and experience rates go into GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini. Still have an old world? Upload the save files over SFTP and make a backup first. Note that Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended are separate games, and a world doesn’t simply move from one to the other.
