Connect a domain name to your Minecraft server
Published on 3 October 2026 Updated on 9 October 2026
With your own domain name, your friends connect with a name like play.yourname.com instead of an IP address. If your domain is with CakeHosting, the Link to server tab sets the record for you. If it is with another provider, you set the records yourself.
Link it automatically in My CakeHosting
Open your domain in My CakeHosting and choose the Link to server tab. Pick your game server and a subdomain, for example play, and click Link. We then set an A record to the IP address of your server.
An SRV record isn’t possible yet with a domain name from us. If your server runs on port 25565, players only type play.yourname.com. On another port they add the port, like play.yourname.com:25571. After linking, My CakeHosting shows which address players use.

No domain name yet? Use the domain name checker to see whether your name is available. Registration starts right after payment, for 1 year; the right of withdrawal ends once the domain is registered and a running period is not refunded.
Set the records yourself
Is your domain with another provider, or do you prefer to do it yourself? Then follow these three steps.
Find the IP address and the port
Open your server in the game panel. At the top, next to Address, you see the address players use now, for example
203.0.113.24:25571. The number after the colon is the port.Set the DNS records
Open the DNS settings wherever your domain is registered and add these records. The SRV record tells Minecraft Java which port belongs to the name, so players only type the name.
Example for yourname.com with a server on port 25571 Type Name Value Needed A play203.0.113.24, the IP address from step 1Always, for Java and Bedrock SRV _minecraft._tcp.play0 5 25571 play.yourname.com: priority, weight, port and targetOnly for Java on a port other than 25565 If your DNS panel has separate fields, choose service
_minecraft, protocol_tcpand nameplay. Many DNS panels add your domain for you: then enterplay, notplay.yourname.com. If your domain is with us, you can set an A record in the DNS tab, but no SRV record yet.Test the connection
Start Minecraft Java, choose Multiplayer and then Add Server. Enter just
play.yourname.comas the Server Address, without a port. If your server shows up in the list with signal bars, your domain works. If it doesn’t, open a command prompt and typenslookup -type=SRV _minecraft._tcp.play.yourname.com: you should see the port andplay.yourname.comin the answer.
Prefer a free address?
For Minecraft Java you can create a free address like yourserver.trick-game.net under Subdomain in the game panel. That subdomain uses an SRV record, so Java players don’t type a port. A domain of your own is shorter, is registered in your name and also works for a website, for example on our web hosting.
Using Cloudflare?
Set the A record to DNS only, the grey cloud. The orange cloud is a proxy for websites, and Cloudflare says other services belong on DNS only. With the orange cloud, your players won’t get in.
More than one server on a domain?
No problem. Give each server its own name, such as survival and creative, with its own A record and, on a port other than 25565, its own SRV record. Tips for the name itself are in How to choose a domain name.
