A Valheim server is for a regular group, from a few friends up to ten Vikings, building a world together. Everyone logs in whenever they like, without the host having to be online. If friends on a console join in, turn on crossplay.
Just ordered? First steps after your order shows you how to get into the game panel. To change the settings in the Startup tab, see Change your server settings under Startup.
In the Startup tab, fill in a server name, a world name and a password of 5 to 30 characters. Don’t use part of the server name in the password, or the server won’t start.
If console friends join in, turn on Crossplay. If you want BepInEx mods, turn on BepInEx mods and upload the BepInExPack. You can’t have both at once.
Start the server. On PC you connect through Join IP with the address and port from the game panel. With crossplay on, the console shows a six-digit join code.
Add your own player ID to adminlist.txt in the saves folder. That lets you kick and ban players in the game.
Valheim is the Viking survival game by Iron Gate in which you explore, build and defeat bosses. Version 1.0 came out on 9 September 2026, with the final biome, the Deep North, and crossplay between PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. A dedicated server keeps your world online, even when the person who started it is fast asleep.
A Valheim world has room for up to 10 players at once. That limit comes from the game itself, and with crossplay all platforms share those same 10 slots. For a group of friends, CupCake 4 GB is enough. If you build big bases, explore a lot at the same time or run BepInEx mods, choose Cake 6 GB or BIGCake 8 GB. A bigger cake won’t buy you extra slots, though: ten stays ten.
You turn on crossplay in the Startup tab. The server then registers with the crossplay service and shows a six-digit join code in the console. According to the Valheim Wiki, traffic then runs through a relay server, which adds a higher chance of lag; if everyone plays on PC, leave crossplay off. BepInEx mods only work on PC. So you choose per server: crossplay for everyone, or mods for PC players.
In Startup you also choose whether your server appears in the community server list (Public Server) and whether it updates itself on every start (Auto Update). Keep that last one on: players on a newer version can’t connect otherwise. Admins, bans and a whitelist go into adminlist.txt, bannedlist.txt and permittedlist.txt. Everything about crossplay is in Valheim crossplay server: PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch 2.
Survival and building in a world full of fog, with up to 16 players per server.
RuneScape-style survival: build, craft and take down dragons together.
Catch Pals and build a base together, with up to 32 players on one server.

Up to 10 at once. That limit comes from Valheim itself and also applies with crossplay: players on PC and console share the same 10 slots.
For most groups of friends 4 GB is enough. With BepInEx mods, big bases or lots of players exploring at once, choose 6 or 8 GB.
Yes. According to the Iron Gate 1.0 FAQ, Valheim 1.0 has crossplay between all platforms, and the official server guide says a dedicated server with crossplay lets players from any platform join. Turn on Crossplay in the Startup tab and restart; your friends join with the join code from the console.
No. BepInEx mods only work on PC, and with crossplay on the server does not load them. So choose per server: crossplay with console players, or mods for PC players only.
Since 1.0 every world is its own folder in worlds_local. Stop your server, make a backup, upload the whole world folder to saves/worlds_local and set World Name in the Startup tab to the name of that folder.
Server and players need the same version of Valheim. With Auto Update on, your server updates itself on every start, so a restart is usually enough.
Yes. Create the world with your seed in the game first, then upload it to your server. Otherwise the server creates a world with a random seed.
