Rusty voxel barrel with a wrench

Rust server hosting

Rust server hosting at CakeHosting starts at €8.95 a month, including VAT. You pick the map, the player count, the plugins through Oxide or Carbon and how often you wipe. On Premium your server comes with DDoS protection through Cloudflare Magic Transit, which you will appreciate once your server is public in the list.

Rust starts at 8 GB for a small map with friends. A bigger map, more players and lots of plugins need more; our plans go up to 64 GB.

Standard or Premium for Rust?

Rust is one of the heaviest games to host: usage grows with the map size, the number of players and everything that gets built. For a small map with friends, Standard will do; for a busy community server, Premium is the better choice.

Who is a Rust server for?

Your own Rust server is for communities and groups of friends who want their own rules: a PvE server without raids, a small map for an evening with friends or a server with a fixed wipe schedule for your Discord. Running a community? Add a website for your rules and wipe dates with web hosting. Our web hosting comes with DDoS protection through RoyaleHosting, with more than 6 Tbps of capacity.

Setting up your Rust server

Just ordered? First steps after your order shows you how to get into the game panel. To change the settings in the Startup tab, see Change your server settings under Startup.

  1. Step 1: Choose a map and framework

In the Startup tab, set the server name, the map size and the seed, or point Custom Map URL to your own map. Under Modding Framework, choose vanilla, Oxide or Carbon.

  2. Step 2: Set your own RCON password

Replace the RCON password with a strong one that only you know. You use it to manage your server remotely with an RCON tool.

  3. Step 3: Start the server

The first start takes a while, because Rust generates the map. The console shows when the server is ready.

  4. Step 4: Connect

In Rust, open the console with F1 and type client.connect address:port with the address from the game panel.

What does a Rust server need?

Rust is the survival game by Facepunch Studios in which you gather resources, build a base and defend it against other players. On your own server you are in charge: you choose the map, the rules, the plugins and the moment of the wipe.

How much RAM does a Rust server need?

Rust asks more than most games. Memory use grows with the map size, the number of players, everything that gets built and the number of plugins. That is why Rust starts at 8 GB with us. Our advice: BIGCake 8 GB for a small map with friends, SuperCake 12 GB or MegaCake 16 GB for a community server with plugins, and GigaCake 24 GB or TeraCake 32 GB for a big map with lots of players. Usage tends to peak at the end of a wipe, when the most has been built.

How does the monthly wipe work?

Facepunch releases a big update on the first Thursday of every month, usually in the European evening. That update forces a new map: the forced wipe. After the update you restart your server so it updates itself; players on the new version can only connect after that. Your own wipes in between, for example every week, you schedule yourself. Make a backup before each wipe if you want to keep the old map.

What can you change in the game panel?

In the Startup tab you set the name, description, website, banner and logo for the server list, plus the maximum number of players, the map size, the seed and the save interval. Under Modding Framework you choose vanilla, Oxide (uMod) or Carbon; your plugins then go into that framework’s plugin folder. With the RCON port and your password you manage the server remotely, and the App Port is for the Rust+ companion app. A regular restart is easy to set up in Schedules.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM does a Rust server need?

At least 8 GB for a small map. For a community server with plugins we recommend 12 or 16 GB, and for a big map with lots of players 24 or 32 GB.

Can I use plugins on my Rust server?

Yes. In the Startup tab, choose Oxide (uMod) or Carbon under Modding Framework. Your plugins then go into that framework’s plugin folder.

When is the next forced wipe?

On the first Thursday of every month Facepunch releases an update that forces a fresh map; the official Facepunch wiki puts it at 19:00 London time. So the next forced wipes are on 5 November and 3 December 2026. On 22 October there is also a mandatory Halloween update, at 18:00 UK time. Restart your server after an update and it updates itself. Your own wipes in between are up to you.

Can I use a custom map?

Yes. Put a direct download link to your map in Custom Map URL in the Startup tab. If you leave that field empty, the server generates a map with the size and seed you set there.

Can players on PlayStation or Xbox join my Rust server?

No. Rust Console Edition is a separate version with its own servers. Our Rust servers are for the PC version on Steam.

Is my Rust server protected against DDoS attacks?

Yes. Premium comes with DDoS protection through Cloudflare Magic Transit. On Standard, your server has standard DDoS protection from the data centre. If your server is public in the list, choose Premium.
