Simple Voice Chat on your Minecraft server

Published on 5 October 2026

Simple Voice Chat is a voice chat inside Minecraft itself: you hear players who are close to you, and in a group you talk to your friends wherever they are. It runs on your server and in every player’s Minecraft. The voice chat uses its own UDP port. You create that port under Network in the game panel and enter it in the Simple Voice Chat settings.

What do you need?

  • A Minecraft Java server on Paper, which uses the plugin, or on Fabric or NeoForge, which use the mod.
  • An extra port. A Minecraft Java plan comes with one.
  • The Simple Voice Chat mod in every player’s own Minecraft, for Fabric, NeoForge, Forge or Quilt. That’s also true when your server runs the Paper plugin.

How do you install the plugin or the mod?

Make a backup under Backups first. Then:

  • Paper: go to Plugins, under the Minecraft heading. Choose Modrinth under Providers and search for Simple Voice Chat. Leave Server Loaders on PaperMC, pick your Minecraft version under Versions and click Install.
  • Fabric or NeoForge: go to Mods, pick your loader under Mod loader and your version under Minecraft version, and search for Simple Voice Chat. Click the download icon and confirm with Install mod.

Restart your server. On the first start, Simple Voice Chat creates its settings file: on Paper plugins/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties, on Fabric and NeoForge config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties.

How do you give the voice chat its own UDP port?

  1. Go to Network, under the Actions heading, and click Create Allocation. Note the port under Port and type voicechat under Add notes.
  2. Stop your server and open the voicechat-server.properties file in File managers.
  3. At port=, replace 24454 with your extra port, for example port=25602. Leave bind_address empty.
  4. Click Save content and start your server.

Your friends don’t have to enter the port: their mod gets it through your server.

Does it work? Here’s how to test

After startup the console shows Voice chat server started at with your extra port. When a friend joins, successfully connected to voice chat appears with their name. In Minecraft you open the voice chat with the V key; the first time, a short guide helps you pick a microphone. If you’re an operator, you can test a player’s connection in game with /voicechat test and their name.

No connection? Does a friend see a plug icon while the console shows the voice chat running on your port? Then open a ticket with your server address and the port. We’ll check whether UDP traffic gets through properly on our side.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Leaving the default port 24454. That port doesn’t belong to your server, so nobody reaches the voice chat.
  • Setting the port to -1. The voice chat then shares your server’s port. The makers strongly advise against it, because your server’s query uses that port too.
  • Voice chat and Geyser on the same port. Startup then fails with the error Address already in use.
  • Players without the mod. They can still play along, but they won’t hear or talk to anyone.
  • Not restarting. Simple Voice Chat only reads its settings on startup.

Frequently asked questions

Do my friends need to install anything?

Yes, the Simple Voice Chat mod in their own Minecraft, for example with Fabric or NeoForge. Bedrock players who join through Geyser can’t install the mod, so they don’t take part in the voice chat.

Can I use Simple Voice Chat and Geyser at the same time?

Yes, as long as each has its own port. A Java plan comes with one extra port; if you need a second one, open a ticket. Setting up Geyser is covered in Install Geyser.

Can I hear players at any distance?

No. By default you hear players up to 48 blocks away; that’s the max_voice_distance setting. In a group, which you create in the voice chat menu, you hear your group at any distance.
