How to make a shield in Minecraft (and put a banner on it)
Published on 27 October 2026
How to make a shield in Minecraft: put one iron ingot and six wooden planks on a crafting table in a Y shape. Plank, iron, plank along the top, three planks in the middle and one plank in the centre of the bottom row. Hold the shield in your off-hand and block to stop most attacks from the front. Below: blocking, banners, enchantments, repairs and what axes do to it. Checked against the game data of Java 26.3 on 27 October 2026.
How to make a shield in Minecraft: the recipe
| Left | Middle | Right |
|---|---|---|
| Planks | Iron ingot | Planks |
| Planks | Planks | Planks |
| Empty | Planks | Empty |
Any kind of planks works, from oak to bamboo, and you can mix them. For the iron ingot, smelt one raw iron in a furnace.
No iron yet? An armorer can sell you one at Journeyman level for five emeralds, and a slightly worn shield can turn up as a reward in trial chamber vaults.
A shield has 336 durability. It doesn’t stack, so you carry one per slot.
How do you block with a shield?
Put the shield in your off-hand. In Java, press use (right mouse button) to raise it. In Bedrock you raise it by sneaking. Since 26.3 in Java, blocking also takes priority over a hoe or shovel in your main hand; sneak if you want to till or make a path instead.
- A short delay. The shield works a quarter of a second (5 ticks) after you raise it. Raise it before the hit lands.
- Only from the front. It covers the half circle you’re facing. A skeleton behind you still hits.
- You move slowly. While blocking, you walk at sneaking speed.
A raised shield stops melee hits, arrows, thrown tridents, fireballs and explosions, including creepers. It doesn’t stop arrows from a crossbow with Piercing, lightning, potion effects, fall damage or the warden’s sonic boom. A guardian’s laser only gets partly blocked.
Every blocked hit of 3 damage or more costs durability, about as much as the damage you blocked. A big hit wears a shield down quickly.
Put a banner on your shield
A plain shield looks like bare wood. To decorate it, place the shield and a banner anywhere on a crafting table. The shield takes the banner’s colour and pattern, and the banner is used up.
- The shield must not have a pattern yet. You can’t wash a shield clean in a cauldron either, so choose your design carefully.
- Durability and enchantments stay as they were.
- A shield shows patterns at half the resolution of a banner, so fine details look a little blockier.
A matching shield and banner make a group look like a real guild. An Expert cartographer can sell banners for two emeralds each, so a whole server can wear the same colours.
Which enchantments fit a shield?
You can’t enchant a shield at an enchanting table. Use an anvil with an enchanted book. Three enchantments fit:
- Unbreaking III: a chance that a blocked hit costs no durability.
- Mending: experience you pick up repairs the shield. The best choice for a shield you use every day.
- Curse of Vanishing: the shield disappears when you die. Not one you want.
Unbreaking and Mending together keep a shield going almost forever. Where to find those books, and what to put on the rest of your gear, is in the best Minecraft enchantments for every item.
Repair a shield
- Anvil with planks: any planks repair a shield, and it keeps its pattern and enchantments. This costs experience.
- Anvil with a second shield: adds up the durability of both, and the shield keeps its pattern and enchantments.
- Crafting grid or grindstone: two damaged shields become one, with both durabilities added plus 5%. On a crafting grid the pattern is lost and enchantments disappear. A grindstone keeps the pattern of the shield in the top slot, but also removes enchantments.
Has your shield got Mending? Then the easiest repair is simply collecting experience, for example at an XP farm.
Shields against axes and the mace
An axe is a shield’s weak spot. One hit from an axe on a raised shield disables all your shields for 5 seconds. That goes for players and for mobs carrying an axe, such as vindicators and piglin brutes. A melee hit from a warden does the same. In PvP, step back when your shield is disabled and raise it again once the 5 seconds are over.
A mace doesn’t disable a shield. Its smash attack is a melee hit, so a raised shield blocks it from the front. But the damage of a smash grows with the height of the fall, and the shield loses durability in proportion. One heavy smash can cost dozens of durability points. A spear doesn’t disable shields either.
The rule of thumb for PvP: keep a shield in your off-hand, watch for players switching to an axe, and repair often.
Shields on a server
On a survival server, a shield is one of the first things worth making: iron is cheap, and it saves you against skeletons and creepers from day one. For PvP between friends, you decide the rules. PvP is a game rule since 1.21.9, so you switch it on or off with gamerule pvp true or false in the console.
