How to make a cake in Minecraft
Published on 3 October 2026
To make a cake in Minecraft, put three milk buckets, two sugar, one egg and three wheat on a crafting table. Place it down to eat it in seven slices, and add a candle and some flint and steel for a birthday cake.
We’re called CakeHosting, so we know this recipe by heart. Checked against Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52.
What is the cake recipe in Minecraft?
| Row | Left | Middle | Right |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | Milk bucket | Milk bucket | Milk bucket |
| Middle | Sugar | Egg | Sugar |
| Bottom | Wheat | Wheat | Wheat |
- Gather the ingredients. Where to find them is below.
- Open a crafting table. The recipe doesn’t fit in the small grid in your inventory.
- Lay everything out as in the table and take your cake.
- Keep your buckets. In Java the three empty buckets stay in the grid; in Bedrock they go to your inventory.
Any egg works, including the blue and brown eggs from chickens in cold and warm places. That’s been the case since Java 1.21.5 and Bedrock 1.21.70.
Where do you get milk, sugar, an egg and wheat?
- Milk: craft a bucket from three iron ingots and use it on a cow, mooshroom or goat.
- Sugar: from sugar cane, which grows next to water. One sugar cane gives one sugar, and a honey bottle gives three.
- Egg: chickens lay one every five to ten minutes, no feeding needed.
- Wheat: break grass for wheat seeds, plant them on farmland close to water and harvest when the crop turns golden brown. A hay bale also crafts back into nine wheat.

How do you eat a cake?
You can’t eat cake from your hand. Place it on a block and use it: each bite removes one of its seven slices. Every slice fills one drumstick on your hunger bar, so the whole cake gives seven. It doesn’t keep you full for long, though, because cake has very little saturation.
- Several players can eat from the same cake at once, which is perfect for a party.
- Once it’s placed, you can’t pick it back up, not even with Silk Touch.
- In Java a cake takes up a whole slot. In Bedrock you can stack 64.
- A redstone comparator next to a full cake gives signal strength 14, and every missing slice takes off 2.
How do you put candles on a cake?
A candle is crafted from string with a honeycomb under it. Add a dye to give it one of sixteen colors.
- Place a whole cake. A candle won’t go on a cake that’s already been eaten from.
- Use the candle on the cake. One candle fits, and the game calls the result a cake with candle.
- Light it with flint and steel, a fire charge or a burning arrow. A lit candle gives off a little light.
- Blow it out by using the candle itself.
As soon as someone eats a slice, the candle pops off. The singing is up to you.
Cake ideas for your server
- Birthday at spawn: place a cake with a lit candle at spawn. Everyone can grab a slice at the same time.
- Cake alarm: put a redstone comparator next to the cake and a lamp further down the line. The less cake there is, the weaker the signal, and when it’s gone the lamp switches off.
- Animals: pandas pick up a cake and eat it, foxes just carry it around. Read why in what foxes eat in Minecraft.
