How to breed villagers in Minecraft
Published on 3 October 2026
To breed villagers in Minecraft, give them spare beds and enough food: each villager needs three bread or twelve carrots, potatoes or beetroots, and every new baby needs a free bed with two empty blocks above it. Villagers then breed on their own, and the babies are grown up after twenty minutes.
Below you’ll find the steps, which workstation gives which job and how to trade smart for emeralds. Checked against Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52.
How do you breed villagers?
- Place beds. Every new villager needs an unclaimed bed with two empty blocks above it.
- Give them food. Throw bread, carrots, potatoes or beetroots at them. A villager becomes willing with three bread or twelve carrots, potatoes or beetroots. Farmers share their harvest too.
- Keep them close together. Hearts mean they’re willing, and a baby appears shortly after.
- Wait twenty minutes. The baby grows up and can then take a job.
In Java a villager has to be able to reach a free bed within 48 blocks, otherwise you’ll see angry particles instead of hearts. After breeding, the parents need five minutes before they’re willing again. Trading with them can also make villagers willing. A golden dandelion doesn’t work on baby villagers, though it does on other animals; see what animals eat in Minecraft.

A villager in a green coat is a nitwit. Nitwits never take a job and won’t trade, but they can still breed.
How do you give a villager a job or new trades?
- Place a workstation near an unemployed villager. In Java they look for one within 48 blocks.
- Wait for them to walk over. Green particles mean the block is claimed.
- Check the offers. Don’t like them and haven’t traded yet? Break the workstation and put it back. The villager picks again and rolls new trades.
- Trade once and the villager keeps that job and those trades for good.
That’s how you hunt for a librarian who sells Mending: as long as you haven’t traded, you can keep swapping the lectern.
How do you trade smart for emeralds?
- Levels: villagers go from Novice to Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Master. Each level unlocks new trades.
- Easy emeralds: a fletcher buys 32 sticks for one emerald, and a farmer pays one emerald for 20 wheat. Perfect for a fresh world.
- Restocking: a sold-out trade refills when the villager works at their workstation, up to twice a day.
- Discounts: cure a zombie villager with a splash potion of Weakness and a golden apple. After three to five minutes it turns back, and you get a permanent discount. Some igloo basements have everything ready for this. How to brew Weakness is in every Minecraft potion recipe.
- Supply and demand: buy a lot of the same thing and the price goes up. Give it a rest and it drops back.
Building a trading hall on your server
On a server with friends, a shared trading hall works well: every villager in its own one-block cell with its workstation in front, so nobody wanders off. Group the librarians with the best books together, and you’ll find the enchantments from the best Minecraft enchantments in seconds.
In Java, prices depend on your own reputation with each villager. Whoever cures a zombie villager gets a permanent discount from it and a smaller one from villagers nearby, while friends don’t share that discount. So agree on who does the trading. Need a village fast? With commands on, /locate structure #village finds one in Java and /locate structure village in Bedrock.
