What do goats eat in Minecraft? Wheat, goat horns and breeding

Published on 27 October 2026

What do goats eat in Minecraft? Only wheat. You use it to lure goats, to breed two adults and to make a baby goat grow up faster. Nothing else works on a goat: no seeds, no carrots, no hay bale. So bring a stack of wheat when you head into the mountains.

Below you’ll find where goats spawn, how breeding works, how to collect all eight goat horns and how to stay on your feet when a goat decides to ram you. Checked against Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52 (Bedrock 26.60 is planned for 27 October 2026).

What do goats eat in Minecraft?

Wheat, and nothing else. Hold wheat in your hand and goats within ten blocks walk after you. That’s the easiest way to bring a goat down a mountain, and much safer than dragging it along a cliff edge on a lead. Wheat has a second use: a goat that is lowering its head to ram something gives up the charge and walks towards you instead.

Feed wheat to two adults to breed them, or to a baby to speed it up. A baby goat normally takes 20 minutes to grow up, and every piece of wheat takes 10 percent off the time it still needs. Goats don’t need food to give milk. Use an empty bucket on an adult goat and you get a milk bucket, just like from a cow. Drinking milk clears all status effects, and a cake needs three buckets of it. For the food of every other animal, see what animals eat in Minecraft.

Where do goats spawn?

Goats live high up, in three mountain biomes: snowy slopes, jagged peaks and frozen peaks. When the world is generated they appear in groups of two or three, on stone, gravel, packed ice or snow blocks at the surface. Later on new goats still spawn, but alone and less often. About 5 percent of goats spawn as babies.

Look for the snowy peaks far above the tree line. Goats like to climb, so you often spot them on the steepest slopes. They avoid powder snow, which is exactly the block that makes those slopes dangerous for you. Wear leather boots and you can walk on powder snow instead of sinking into it.

Goats are built for this terrain. They take 10 points (five hearts) less fall damage than other mobs. When they need to cross a small gap or a patch of powder snow, they leap up to 10 blocks high and 5 blocks sideways. After such a jump a goat waits 30 to 60 seconds before it can do it again. It never jumps down more than 5 blocks on purpose, but another mob or a piston can still push it off a cliff.

How do you breed goats?

  1. Find two adult goats. Lure them together with wheat or lead them into a pen.
  2. Feed each one a piece of wheat. They enter love mode and walk towards each other.
  3. Wait for the baby. A baby goat appears and you get 1 to 7 experience points.

The parents can breed again after five minutes. Two normal goats have a 2 percent chance of a screaming baby. With one screaming parent the chance is about 50 percent. Two screaming parents always give a screaming baby in Java, and in 98 percent of cases in Bedrock.

Want to keep a baby goat small? Since Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10 you can feed it a golden dandelion, which you craft from a dandelion surrounded by eight gold nuggets. The baby stops ageing and no longer despawns. Feed it a second golden dandelion and it starts growing again. In the same update baby goats got a new model with small horns.

How do you get goat horns?

Goats drop no items when they die, only experience. Their horns come off another way: when an adult goat rams a hard block from its own habitat. Those blocks are stone, coal ore, copper ore, iron ore, emerald ore, any log and packed ice. Each adult has up to two horns, and they never grow back. About 10 percent of goats spawn with only one horn, and baby goats never drop horns.

The trick is to make a goat miss you. Stand with your back to a stone wall or a tree trunk and wait until a goat lowers its head. Step aside just before it charges. The goat slams into the block and a horn drops. Pillager outpost chests can also contain a goat horn, but only one of the four normal variants.

The eight goat horns and which goats drop them
Dropped byHorn variants
Normal goatsPonder, Sing, Seek, Feel
Screaming goatsAdmire, Call, Yearn, Dream
Pillager outpost chestOne of the four normal variants

Both horns of one goat are always the same variant. So for the full set you need horns from at least four normal goats and four screaming goats. A goat horn plays a loud call when you use it, and every variant sounds different; Seek is the same sound as the horn that announces a raid. After you blow a horn you wait seven seconds before you can use any goat horn again, but the friend next to you can blow theirs straight away.

Screaming goats and ramming

Goats are neutral, but they ram. Every 30 seconds to 5 minutes a goat picks a target that is standing still, between 4 and 16 blocks away. That can be you, another mob or an armor stand. It lowers its head, stomps and charges. A hit from an adult does 2 points of damage on Easy and Normal and 3 on Hard, and it knocks the target 9 blocks back. On a mountain that knockback is the real danger, because it can push you off a ledge. A baby goat hits for half the damage and half the knockback.

Screaming goats look exactly like normal goats. They sound different, though, and they ram far more often: every 5 to 15 seconds. Java calls them screaming goats, Bedrock calls them screamer goats. If a goat in your herd keeps charging, you probably found one, and it’s your source of the four rarer horns.

Goats never hit back when you attack them, and they don’t call other goats for help. They leave players in Creative mode and on Peaceful alone. Most mobs don’t fight back after a ram either, with a few exceptions such as piglins, hoglins and the warden. In Bedrock only, ramming a zombified piglin makes the other zombified piglins nearby attack the goat.

Goats on a server: fences and farms

On a server with friends, goats are a mountain hazard and a useful farm animal at the same time. Some tips for a shared world:

  • Build the pen away from edges. A ram knocks players 9 blocks back. Put the goat pen on flat ground, not next to the balcony of your mountain base.
  • Keep the floor flat and closed. Goats use their long jump to cross holes and powder snow, so don’t leave gaps in the pen floor.
  • Mind your armor stands. Goats ram armor stands too, so don’t display your best gear right next to the pen.
  • Make a horn wall. Line one side of the pen with stone or logs. Stand in front of it, wait for a charge and step aside. Every adult gives up to two horns.
  • Agree on horn signals. Other players hear a goat horn from up to 256 blocks away, but on a server the server’s view distance limits that as well. Pick one horn for “come to base” and another for “help”, so everyone knows what a call means.

Collecting all eight horns together? On your own Minecraft server your mountain base and goat pen stay put when you log off, and your friends can keep playing. Plans start at €4.95 per month. See the Minecraft server plans.

Frequently asked questions

What do goats eat in Minecraft?

Only wheat. Goats within ten blocks follow you when you hold it, two adults breed after one piece each, and every piece fed to a baby goat takes 10 percent off its remaining growing time.

How do you get a goat horn in Minecraft?
