The best diamond level in Minecraft
Published on 5 October 2026
The best diamond level in Minecraft is around Y=-58 and Y=-59, just above bedrock: diamonds only generate below Y=16 and get more common the deeper you go. If you’d rather not deal with lava, mine at Y=-54, just above the layer where the game filled open caves with lava.
Below you’ll find how to check your height, which mining method finds the most, how to stay out of lava and what to craft with your first diamonds. Everything is checked against Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52.
Which Y level has the most diamonds?
Diamond ore generates from Y=16 all the way down to the bottom of the world, and it gets more common the lower you go. Below Y=0 it usually sits in deepslate, as deepslate diamond ore. Old tips that recommend Y=11 or Y=12 date from before version 1.18 in 2021 and no longer apply.
| Height | What you’ll find there |
|---|---|
| Y=16 | Diamonds start here, but they’re still rare |
| Y=0 and below | Diamonds in deepslate, more and more often |
| Y=-54 | A comfortable mining level, just above the lava layer |
| Y=-55 to Y=-63 | Open caves here are filled with lava |
| Y=-58 and Y=-59 | The most diamonds |
| Below Y=-59 | Bedrock starts, leaving less room for ore |
In Java, press F3 to see your height: the middle number after XYZ is your Y level. In Bedrock, switch on the Show Coordinates setting. Our guide on how to show coordinates in Minecraft covers every device.
What’s the best way to mine for diamonds?
Exploring caves is quick, because you see a lot of stone at once. But diamond ore touching air is less likely to generate, and caves are full of mobs. Branch mining takes more digging, but you miss far less. Here’s how to do it:
- Pack the right gear. An iron pickaxe or better, torches, food, a water bucket and a stack of cobblestone.
- Dig down to Y=-54. Use a staircase rather than a hole straight down, so you can always see what’s ahead of you.
- Dig a main tunnel. Two blocks high and as long as you like.
- Dig branches. Every three blocks, dig a side tunnel about twenty blocks long. That leaves two blocks of stone between branches, so you see almost every block.
- Check the walls of underground lakes. Diamond ore next to water or lava generates as often as anywhere else, so you’ll spot it there relatively often.
Mined with an iron, diamond or netherite pickaxe, each ore drops one diamond plus some experience, while a stone pickaxe gets you nothing. Fortune raises the average: with Fortune III it’s about 2.2 diamonds per ore, sometimes four. Silk Touch gives you the ore block itself, which you can mine later with Fortune. How do you avoid lava?
When the world was generated, every open space between Y=-63 and Y=-55 was filled with lava. At that depth you’ll keep running into lava lakes. Here’s how to stay in one piece:
- Mine at Y=-54. You’ll be walking just above those lava lakes, so lava tends to be below you rather than next to your head.
- Keep a water bucket handy. Water on still lava turns it into obsidian, and it puts you out if you catch fire.
- Keep cobblestone in your hotbar. If lava flows into your tunnel, block it off straight away.
- Bring a potion of fire resistance. It protects you if things go wrong anyway. Our brewing guide shows how to make one.
Diamonds in chests and structures
Not every diamond is buried in stone. These are the chests where Java gives you the best odds:
| Location | Chance |
|---|---|
| Buried treasure | 53% |
| Hidden copper chest at an abandoned camp (since 26.3) | 36% |
| Ominous vault in a trial chamber | 26% |
| End city chest | 20% |
| Nether fortress chest | 18% |
| Weaponsmith’s chest in a village | 14% |
| Shipwreck treasure chest | 14% |
You find buried treasure with a buried treasure map from a shipwreck or an ocean ruin. In Bedrock the odds are almost the same.
What should you craft first with diamonds?
- A diamond pickaxe (3 diamonds). Only then can you mine obsidian, which you need for an enchanting table and a nether portal.
- An enchanting table (2 diamonds). Together with a book and four obsidian.
- A diamond sword (2 diamonds). For when you head deeper into the caves.
- Diamond armor (24 diamonds). Chestplate 8, leggings 7, helmet 5 and boots 4.
Later you upgrade diamond gear to netherite at a smithing table, using a netherite ingot and a smithing template. Copying one of those templates takes seven diamonds. And a jukebox only costs one.
Java vs Bedrock: what’s different?
- You check your height with F3 in Java and with the Show Coordinates setting in Bedrock.
- The chest odds are very close. A regular vault gives a 10.7% chance of a diamond in Bedrock and 8.5% in Java.
- In Bedrock, throwing a diamond at another player earns the achievement Diamonds to you!
Hunting diamonds on a server with friends
Diamond ore doesn’t grow back: once someone has mined it, it’s gone. So agree who mines where, or dig one big branch mine together with a shared chest at the entrance. A vault in a trial chamber rewards each player once, so you get more out of it as a group. Keep your haul somewhere safe, too; our guide to protecting your server from griefers has tips.
Got diamonds to spare? A few diamond blocks also look great in the pyramid under a beacon.
