How to show coordinates in Minecraft
Published on 5 October 2026
In Minecraft Java, press F3 (Fn+F3 on some Macs and laptops) to show your coordinates, and use F3+F6 to keep them on screen permanently. In Bedrock, whether on console, phone or Windows, switch on Show Coordinates in the world settings.
Below you’ll find how it works on each device, what X, Y and Z mean and how to find your way back to your base, your death spot and your friends. Everything is checked against Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52.
| Device | How to do it |
|---|---|
| PC or Mac (Java) | F3, or F3+F6 to keep them on screen |
| Windows (Bedrock) | Settings, Game, Show Coordinates |
| PlayStation, Xbox, Switch | Settings, Game, Show Coordinates |
| Phone and tablet | Settings, Game, Show Coordinates |
How to turn on coordinates on PC (Java)
Press F3. The debug screen appears in the top left, with a line starting with XYZ: those are your coordinates. Below it you’ll see Block, the block your feet are in, and Facing, the direction you’re looking.
Since Java 1.21.9 you choose what that screen shows. Here’s how to pin your coordinates to the screen:
- Press F3+F6. The Debug Options menu opens.
- Find player_position. That’s the line with your coordinates.
- Set it to Always. Your coordinates now stay on screen, even without F3.
The menu warns you that these options might crash the game or eat your pet rock. Your pet rock is safe, promise.
No coordinates, even with F3? Then the world or server has the reduced_debug_info game rule switched on, which hides your position on purpose. Another handy one is F3+C, which copies your current location to your clipboard as a teleport command. Just don’t hold those keys down for ten seconds, because that makes the game crash deliberately.
How to show coordinates on console and mobile (Bedrock)
In Bedrock, coordinates are a per-world setting, and once they’re on, everyone in that world sees them in the top left.
- Open the pause menu and choose Settings.
- Go to Game. Under World Options you’ll find Show Coordinates.
- Flip the toggle. Your position appears in the top left, without decimals.
You can also turn it on when you create a world, or with the command /gamerule showcoordinates true. The toggle doesn’t need cheats, but the command does. Right next to it is Show Days Played, if you want to see how long your world has been going.
On Windows and mobile you can also switch on Enable Copy Coordinate UI under Settings, Creator. It shows your coordinates in the chat screen, with a button to copy them. That option doesn’t exist on consoles.
What do X, Y and Z mean?
| Axis | Meaning |
|---|---|
| X | East or west: a higher number is further east |
| Y | Height: from -64 at the bottom to 320, with sea level at 63 |
| Z | South or north: a higher number is further south |
The point X=0, Z=0 is the centre of the world, and your coordinates are those of your feet. Looking for diamonds? Then Y is the number to watch, see the best diamond level in Minecraft.
In the Nether, every block counts for eight blocks in the Overworld. Standing at X=100, Z=50 in the Nether matches X=800, Z=400 in the Overworld. That’s how you build nether portals that line up neatly.
Finding your base and your death spot
- Write down your base. Put the coordinates on a sign at spawn or in a book. With coordinates on screen you can always walk back.
- Compass. Points to the world spawn. Use it on a lodestone and it points to that lodestone from then on. A lodestone takes eight chiseled stone bricks and one iron ingot.
- Recovery compass. Points to where you last died. You craft it from a compass and eight echo shards, which you find in ancient city chests in the deep dark.
- Note your death spot straight away. Your items disappear after five minutes while that part of the world is loaded. Rather not lose anything at all? Here’s how to turn on keep inventory.
Sharing coordinates with friends
- Type them in chat. Something like X 120, Y 64, Z -340. On a server everyone sees it at once.
- Teleport there. With cheats on, or as an operator, you can jump straight there with
/tp @s 120 64 -340. More commands like that are in our list of useful Minecraft commands. - Use the locator bar. Since Java 1.21.6 and Bedrock 1.21.90, coloured dots where your experience bar sits show which direction your friends are in. Anyone who sneaks, wears a mob head or carved pumpkin, or is invisible drops off the bar.
Rather not have everyone know where you live? Only share your coordinates with people you trust. There are more tips in our guide to protecting your server from griefers.
Coordinates on a server
As the server owner, you decide what players see. On a Java server, /gamerule reduced_debug_info true hides coordinates for everyone, and /gamerule locator_bar false turns off the locator bar. On a Bedrock server, /gamerule showcoordinates true switches coordinates on for everyone, and /gamerule playerwaypoints off removes the dots. You type commands like these in your server console.
Exploring a world together? On your own Minecraft server your world stays up when you log off, and you set the rules. If your friends play on console or mobile, go for a Bedrock server. See the Minecraft plans.
