How to make a water elevator in Minecraft
Published on 27 October 2026
A water elevator in Minecraft is a one-block-wide shaft full of water with soul sand at the bottom. The soul sand makes a bubble column that shoots you up, and you can breathe inside it. Swap the soul sand for a magma block and the bubbles pull you down instead. Below: how it works, what you need, how to build one going up and one going down, and how to fix an elevator that won’t work. We tested the bubble columns on a Java 26.3 server on 27 October 2026.
How does a bubble elevator work?
Soul sand under water creates an upward bubble column. A magma block under water creates a downward one, a whirlpool. The column runs up through every water source block above it, up to the surface or the first block in the way.
- Only source blocks. A column stops at the first flowing water block or waterlogged block. On our test server, one flowing block halfway up was enough to remove the bubbles above it.
- It takes a moment. A column appears one second after you place the soul sand or magma block.
- You can breathe. A bubble column refills your air, so you can’t drown in it.
| Block at the bottom | Java | Bedrock |
|---|---|---|
| Soul sand (up) | About 11 blocks a second | About 14 blocks a second |
| Magma block (down) | About 4.9 blocks a second | About 6 blocks a second |
What you need
- Soul sand for an elevator going up. You find it in the Nether, in soul sand valleys and around fortresses. Soul soil looks similar but doesn’t make bubbles.
- A magma block for an elevator going down. Craft one from four magma cream, or find them in the Nether and on the ocean floor.
- Water buckets. Ideally a few, or one bucket and some kelp (see the trick below).
- Building blocks or glass for the walls. Glass looks great: you watch the world fly past.
- Glass panes, fences or iron bars for the entrance. They keep the water in but let you walk through a corner.
Build a water elevator in Minecraft going up
- Build the shaft. Make a 1 by 1 column of blocks as high as you want to go, open at the top. Dig one block deeper at the bottom for the soul sand later.
- Make the entrance. Replace the two bottom blocks of two walls that meet at a corner with glass panes or fences. You step in diagonally, and the water stays inside.
- Fill it with source blocks. Pour water at the top. Then swim up from the bottom and place a kelp plant on every block of the shaft. Kelp turns flowing water into source blocks. When you reach the top, break the lowest piece of kelp: the whole plant breaks and every block stays a water source.
- Place the soul sand last. Put it in the hole at the very bottom. Do it last, because you can’t swim down through an upward bubble column.
- Make the exit. Let the water end at the floor of your top room. The column pushes you out of the water and you step off sideways onto the floor.
Prefer buckets? Then place a water source at every level, from the bottom up. Any gap means the bubbles stop there.
Build an elevator going down
An elevator down is built the same way, with a magma block at the bottom instead of soul sand. It works, but it has two downsides. It’s slower than simply falling. And a magma block hurts you when you stand on it, unless you sneak. So step out quickly at the bottom, or keep sneaking until you’re off it.
A drop shaft is often handier. Dig a separate 1 by 1 shaft next to your elevator. At the bottom, place a sign inside the shaft at eye level, two blocks above the floor. Place a water source two blocks above the sign: it flows down and the sign holds it. You fall into that water, which breaks your fall, drop past the sign and walk out at the bottom. Put the drop shaft and the up elevator side by side and you have a quick way down and up, for example for a deep mine. Mining for diamonds at the bottom of the world? The best diamond level is far down, so an elevator back up saves a long climb.
Fix an elevator that does not work
- No bubbles at all. Check the bottom block. It must be soul sand (not soul soil) or a magma block, directly below water.
- The bubbles stop halfway. Somewhere a block is flowing water instead of a source. Fill that spot with a bucket or use the kelp trick again. Waterlogged blocks, such as slabs or stairs inside the shaft, stop the column too.
- You shoot past your floor. The elevator is fast. Make the exit taller, or let the shaft end at the floor you want.
- Water leaks out. Use fences, glass panes, iron bars or signs at the openings: they hold water back.
- Horses won’t fit. A horse needs a shaft of 2 by 2 blocks.
Water elevators on a server
On a shared world, an elevator at spawn up to a sky base or down to a group mine is one of the best things to build together. It needs no redstone and keeps working without any upkeep. Tell everyone where the drop shaft is, so nobody falls the wrong way.
