Armor Trims in Minecraft: All Trims and Where to Find Them
Published on 27 October 2026
Armor trims in Minecraft are decorative patterns you put on armor at a smithing table. There are 18 of them. Each trim comes from an armor trim smithing template that you find in one structure, such as a pillager outpost, an ancient city or the trial chambers. The colour comes from one of 11 trim materials, from iron to resin brick. Trims don’t change your protection: they are purely for looks.
Below are all trims with where to find them, how to apply one, the materials, and how to copy a template with diamonds. Checked against Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52 (Bedrock 26.60 is planned for 27 October 2026).
What are armor trims?
An armor trim is a pattern drawn over an armor piece. You need three things: a smithing template with the pattern, the armor piece and a trim material for the colour. Most trims cover a small part of the armor. Silence is the exception: it lets the material cover most of the piece.
The templates have a rarity. Silence is epic, Ward, Eye, Vex and Spire are rare, and the rest are uncommon. Some patterns reflect where you find them: the snout trim from a bastion looks like a piglin nose.

The chances below are per chest or per drop, and they are the same in Java and Bedrock. The last column shows the block or item you need to copy the template (more about that further down).
| Trim | Where you find it | Copy with |
|---|---|---|
| Sentry | Pillager outpost chest, 25%, two at once | Cobblestone |
| Vex | Woodland mansion chest, 50% | Cobblestone |
| Wild | Jungle temple chest, 33.3%, two at once | Mossy cobblestone |
| Coast | Shipwreck chests, 16.7%, two at once | Cobblestone |
| Dune | Desert temple chest, 14.3%, two at once | Sandstone |
| Wayfinder | Trail ruins, rare suspicious gravel, 8.3% | Terracotta |
| Raiser | Trail ruins, rare suspicious gravel, 8.3% | Terracotta |
| Shaper | Trail ruins, rare suspicious gravel, 8.3% | Terracotta |
| Host | Trail ruins, rare suspicious gravel, 8.3% | Terracotta |
| Ward | Ancient city chest, 5% | Cobbled deepslate |
| Silence | Ancient city chest, 1.2% | Cobbled deepslate |
| Tide | Elder guardian, 20% drop | Prismarine |
| Snout | Bastion remnant chests, 8.3% | Blackstone |
| Rib | Nether fortress chest, 6.7% | Netherrack |
| Eye | Stronghold library chest, always; altar chest, 10% | End stone |
| Spire | End city chest, 6.7% | Purpur block |
| Flow | Trial chambers, ominous vault, 22.5% | Breeze rod |
| Bolt | Trial chambers, vault and reward chest, 6.3% | Block of copper |
A few tips. The elder guardian drops the tide trim even if a player didn’t kill it, and Looting doesn’t raise the chance. In a woodland mansion only chests with random loot can hold the vex trim. Rare suspicious gravel in trail ruins needs a brush. Flow and bolt come from vaults; read Minecraft trial chambers for keys and vaults.
The netherite upgrade is a smithing template too, but not a trim. Every bastion treasure chest has one. See how to get netherite.
How to apply a trim
- Craft a smithing table from 2 iron ingots and 4 planks, or use one in a village toolsmith’s house or in trail ruins.
- Put the template in the first slot.
- Add the armor piece. Leather, chainmail, copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite armor all work, and so does a turtle shell.
- Add a trim material and take the trimmed piece from the output slot.
The template is used up. One piece can only carry one trim: a new trim replaces the old one. You can mix different trims and colours across your helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots.
Trim materials and colours
There are 11 trim materials: amethyst shard, copper ingot, diamond, emerald, gold ingot, iron ingot, lapis lazuli, nether quartz, netherite ingot, redstone dust and resin brick. The material sets the colour of the pattern. If the armor and the material match, such as a diamond trim on diamond armor, the game uses a slightly darker shade so the trim still shows.
Two side effects are worth knowing. Piglins don’t count gold trim as gold armor: they stay hostile unless the armor itself is golden. And a netherite trim doesn’t make armor fireproof: an iron piece with a netherite trim still burns in lava.
How to duplicate a smithing template
Each template is used up when you trim, so copy it before you use your last one. Put the template in the top middle slot of a crafting table, the copy material from the table in the centre slot, and 7 diamonds in all other slots. You get 2 templates back: your own and a new copy.
Bedrock accepts a few extra blocks. There you can also copy tide with prismarine bricks or dark prismarine, dune with smooth, cut or chiseled sandstone, and spire with a purpur pillar. Bolt works with a waxed block of copper as well, in both editions.
Show off trims on a server
- Everyone sees your trims. They are part of the armor, so other players see them on you.
- Vaults give everyone a turn. Each player can unlock a specific vault once. On a server, each friend can open the same vault for their own chance at flow or bolt.
- Chests are first come, first served. A looted chest stays empty. Copy rare templates and share them; they stack up to 64.
- Collect them together. Applying spire, snout, rib, ward, silence, vex, tide and wayfinder at least once gives the challenge advancement Smithing with Style, worth 150 experience. Your first trim gives Crafting a New Look.
