Axolotls in Minecraft: catch, feed and breed

Published on 5 October 2026

Axolotls in Minecraft only eat a bucket of tropical fish: that’s what you use to lure them, breed them and make babies grow up faster. You find them underwater in lush caves, and you catch them with a water bucket.

Below you’ll find where they live, how to bring one home, how to get the rare blue axolotl and why they’re such good company underwater. Everything is checked against Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52.

Where do you find axolotls?

Axolotls only spawn in lush caves, underwater, and only where there’s a clay block less than five blocks below. They come in groups of four to six.

You can spot a lush cave from the surface by an azalea tree: a small tree with azalea leaves, sometimes covered in pink flowers. Dig down nearby and you’ll end up in a cave full of moss, cave vines with glow berries and small pools with clay at the bottom. That’s where the axolotls swim, sometimes alongside tropical fish.

How do you catch an axolotl?

  1. Bring a water bucket. Fill an empty bucket at any water.
  2. Use the bucket on the axolotl. You now have a bucket of axolotl, with the axolotl and the water inside.
  3. Release it at home. Use the bucket where you want it. A water block appears with the axolotl in it.

An axolotl you’ve moved with a bucket never despawns. Do give it water at least two blocks deep. Axolotls can walk on land, but they die after five minutes out of the water. Rain keeps them going, and a splash water bottle gives one another minute and a half of air.

What do axolotls eat?

Only a bucket of tropical fish. A loose tropical fish or any other fish won’t do. To get one, find tropical fish in a lukewarm or warm ocean, a mangrove swamp or a lush cave, and use a water bucket on one. After feeding you get your water bucket back, so you can go straight back to fishing. Wandering traders sometimes sell buckets of tropical fish too.

Hold one of those buckets and axolotls swim after you, up to 10 blocks away in Java and 16 in Bedrock. They hunt fish, squid, tadpoles, drowned and guardians themselves, but leave turtles, dolphins, frogs and other axolotls alone.

How to breed axolotls, including the blue one

  1. Put two adult axolotls together. In a pool at least two blocks deep.
  2. Feed each one a bucket of tropical fish. They swim to each other and a baby appears.
  3. Wait and repeat. In Java the parents can breed again after five minutes, in Bedrock after just one. A baby grows up in twenty minutes, faster with buckets of tropical fish.
The five axolotl colours and how to get each one
ColourHow to get it
Pink (leucistic)Found in lush caves
BrownFound in lush caves
GoldFound in lush caves
CyanFound in lush caves
BlueOnly by breeding, a 1 in 1,200 chance per baby

A blue axolotl never spawns naturally. If a baby isn’t blue, it takes the colour of one of its parents. On average that’s 1,200 babies for one blue, so stock up on buckets of tropical fish. Bedrock gets there a lot faster thanks to its one-minute cooldown, and it even tells you the colour and age of an axolotl in the bucket’s name.

Axolotls as underwater allies

Take a few axolotls along in buckets when you raid an ocean monument. They attack guardians and drowned, and when you finish off a mob they’re fighting, they give you Regeneration. They also remove Mining Fatigue, the effect the elder guardian uses to make mining in a monument such a slog.

You get five seconds of Regeneration I for every axolotl in the fight, capped at two minutes in Java and with no cap in Bedrock. When an axolotl gets hurt it sometimes plays dead: it sinks to the bottom, heals, and hostile sea creatures leave it alone. Going for a long dive? Pack a potion of water breathing as well.

Java vs Bedrock: what’s different?

  • Axolotls follow a bucket of tropical fish from 10 blocks away in Java and 16 in Bedrock.
  • After breeding they wait five minutes in Java and one minute in Bedrock.
  • The Regeneration they give you stops at two minutes in Java. Bedrock has no limit.
  • Only in Bedrock does the bucket’s name show colour and age.

Axolotls on a server with friends

An aquarium near spawn makes a great group project on a server. Make it at least two blocks deep, because an axolotl that ends up on dry land is gone after five minutes. Keep tropical fish out of it: sooner or later the axolotls will go after them. If you’re breeding for a blue one together, keep count of the babies, because it can take a while.

Building an aquarium together? On your own Minecraft server your world stays up even when you’re offline. Friends on console or mobile can join a Bedrock server. See the Minecraft plans.

Frequently asked questions

What do axolotls eat in Minecraft?

Only a bucket of tropical fish. It lures them, breeds them and makes babies grow up faster, and you get your water bucket back after feeding.

How do you get a blue axolotl in Minecraft?

Only by breeding. Every baby has a 1 in 1,200 chance of being blue, so you’ll need plenty of buckets of tropical fish.

Where do axolotls spawn?

Underwater in lush caves, above clay blocks. You can spot a lush cave from the surface by an azalea tree.

How do you take an axolotl home?

Use a water bucket on it and release it at home in water at least two blocks deep. An axolotl you’ve moved never despawns.

Can axolotls live out of water?

For a while. On dry land an axolotl dies after five minutes, unless it’s raining. A splash water bottle gives it another minute and a half of air.
