Create and restore a backup
Published on 3 October 2026
A backup is a copy of all your server’s files at a given moment. If something goes wrong, you put that copy back. In the game panel you create backups in a few clicks, and you can have them made automatically too.
How many backups you can keep at once depends on your plan. A Minecraft plan, for example, keeps 2. You’ll see the number for your server in the game panel under Backups.
Creating a backup
- In the game panel, go to Backups, under the Storage heading.
- Click Create Backup.
- Give the backup a name if you like, for example
before update 26.3. - Want to skip files, such as large log files? Enter them under Ignored Files & Directories.
- Turn on Locked if you definitely want to keep this backup. A locked backup can’t be deleted by accident.
- Click Start backup and wait until it’s finished.
All your slots full? Then delete an old backup before you create a new one by hand.
Automatic backups with a schedule
- Go to Schedules, under the Actions heading, and click Create schedule. Set it to run every night at 4 a.m., for example.
- Open the schedule and use New Task to add a task with the action Create backup.
- Make sure the schedule is enabled.
Good to know: when your slots are full, a scheduled backup automatically replaces the oldest backup that isn’t locked. So lock the backups you want to keep.
Restoring a backup
- Go to Backups and click the menu next to the backup you want to restore.
- Choose Restore.
- Decide whether to tick Delete all files before restoring backup. With that option, everything is removed first, so your server ends up exactly as it was at the time of the backup. Without it, newer files that aren’t in the backup stay in place.
- Confirm with Restore. Your server stops, and while the restore runs you can’t start it or browse your files.
- Start your server once the restore has finished.
Downloading a backup
Want a copy on your own computer? Click the menu next to the backup and choose Download. Definitely do this before you cancel a server, because we delete the files once your service ends.
Smart backup habits
- Make a backup before every update, version change or new modpack.
- Lock a backup from a moment when everything worked well.
- Download a backup to your own computer every now and then.
Under our Terms of Service, you’re responsible for your own backups. If we make backups as well, that’s an extra safeguard without any guarantee.
