Change your server settings under Startup
Published on 3 October 2026
Startup holds your server’s basic settings: for many games the server name, password, player limit and options such as automatic updates. You change them in the game panel, and they apply from the next start. Which settings you see depends on your game.
What’s on the Startup page?
- Startup Command: the command your server starts with, including your settings. You can only view this.
- Docker Image: your server’s software environment. If your game has more than one, you choose it here.
- Variables: the settings themselves. If one says Read Only, its value is fixed.
How do you change a setting?
- Open your server in the game panel and go to Startup, under the Actions heading.
- Find the setting under Variables. Each field has a short description below it.
- Type the new value or flip the switch. There’s no save button: the game panel saves your change after half a second. If the value isn’t valid, you’ll see a message right by the field.
- Restart your server on the Console page. Only then does it use the new value.
Which settings does each game have?
| Game | Settings |
|---|---|
| Valheim | Server Name, World Name, Server Password (5 to 30 characters), Public Server, Crossplay, BepInEx mods, Auto Update |
| Palworld | Server Name, Server Password, Admin Password, Max Players (up to 32), Server Description, Auto Update |
| Minecraft Bedrock | Server Name, Gamemode, Difficulty, Allow cheats, Bedrock Version |
| Minecraft Java | Very few: you choose the version under Versions, and the server picks the Java version itself. |
In Valheim, a new World Name creates a new world; your old world is kept. To load an existing world, enter its exact name. Playing with friends on other platforms is covered in Valheim crossplay server. More about the servers themselves is on the Valheim and Palworld pages.
How do you change the version or software?
On Minecraft Java you do that under Versions; on Bedrock with Bedrock Version followed by Reinstall Server. Many other games keep themselves current on every start with Auto Update. It’s all in Change your server version.
What are the common mistakes?
- Changing the same setting in a file. The game panel writes some values into your server’s files on every start. On Bedrock that’s the server name, game mode, difficulty and cheats in
server.properties. Change those here, or your edit is undone after a restart. - Special characters in a password. If your password is rejected, read the message by the field. Palworld only accepts letters, numbers, dashes and underscores.
- Not restarting. A running server only reads its settings on startup.
- Switching Docker Image on a whim. Keep the default unless you know why you’re changing it.
