The Minecraft Warden: survive it or beat it
Published on 5 October 2026
The Warden is a blind giant in the Deep Dark that you’re better off avoiding than fighting: it has 500 health points and can knock 15 hearts off you in one hit on Normal. You survive it by sneaking, not setting off sculk shriekers and distracting it if it shows up anyway.
Below we explain how it finds you, how to loot an ancient city safely and what it’s all worth. Checked against Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52.
What is the Warden?
The Warden doesn’t just appear. It climbs out of the ground when someone sets off a sculk shrieker four times in the Deep Dark, a pitch-black biome far underground, often below mountains. A few numbers:
- 500 health points, or 250 hearts.
- A punch deals 8 hearts on Easy, 15 on Normal and 22.5 on Hard, and disables your shield for 5 seconds.
- A sonic boom for when you’re too far away. It passes through blocks and ignores your armour and shield.
- Fire and lava don’t hurt it, and you can’t knock it back.
- Darkness: within 20 blocks of it, your screen keeps going dark.
How does it find you?
The Warden is blind. It reacts to vibrations within 15 blocks and sniffs around now and then. Every vibration you cause makes it angrier with you; once it’s angry enough, it roars and comes for you. If it hears nothing for a minute, it digs back into the ground.
| What you do | Does it notice? |
|---|---|
| Walking, jumping or falling | Yes, unless you sneak |
| Walking on wool | No |
| Stepping on a sculk sensor | Yes, even when sneaking |
| Opening a chest | Yes, even when sneaking |
| Eating or drinking | Yes, even when sneaking |
| Placing or breaking a block | Yes, except wool |
| An arrow or snowball landing | Yes, and it goes to look |
Exploring ancient cities safely
The best loot in the Deep Dark is in ancient cities: huge ruins at Y -51, full of chests. They’re often found below mountains. With cheats on, /locate structure ancient_city finds the nearest one, and since 26.3 the secret chest of an abandoned camp can hold a Buried Ancient City Map.
- Always sneak. Then walking makes no vibrations.
- Bring wool. Nothing notices you walking on wool, and wool between you and a sculk sensor blocks the vibration.
- Never step on a sculk sensor. It goes off even when you sneak.
- Count the shriekers. Each time you set one off, your warning level goes up. The fourth time, the Warden comes. That level stays when you die and only drops again after a while.
- Open chests and eat when it’s quiet. It hears that even when you sneak.
- Is it there anyway? Throw a snowball or shoot an arrow far away and it goes to check where it landed. Sneak off or stand still. After a minute of silence it digs back in.
Can you beat the Warden?
Yes, but it’s tough and barely worth it. It breaks your shield, hits you through walls and has five times the health of an iron golem. The advice on minecraft.net is the same: avoid it or distract it rather than fight it. Even with a Density V mace, the Minecraft Wiki says you’d have to fall about 95 blocks to take it out in one hit; how that weapon works is in the Minecraft mace.
On your own server you can simply switch it off. In Java, use /gamerule spawn_wardens false: shriekers still make noise, but no Warden comes. On Peaceful it doesn’t spawn in either edition. More game rules are in our Minecraft commands guide.
What’s it worth?
The Warden itself only drops a sculk catalyst and 5 experience points. The real prize is in the ancient city chests:
| Loot | What it’s for |
|---|---|
| Swift Sneak book | On leggings you move faster while sneaking. Only found here. |
| Echo shards | Eight around a compass make a recovery compass, which points to where you last died. |
| Enchanted golden apple | A rare apple with a long list of effects. |
| Disc fragments | Nine fragments together make music disc 5. |
| Smithing templates | The Silence and Ward armour trims. |
Swift Sneak is extra useful down here: the faster you move while sneaking, the faster you’re out. Where it fits best is in the best Minecraft enchantments. Fancy another underground challenge, with a vault of loot for every player? Try the trial chambers.
