OptiFine 26.3 for Minecraft: is it out yet, and what now?
Published on 27 October 2026
No, OptiFine 26.3 isn’t out yet. On 27 October 2026 the download page on optifine.net has nothing for Minecraft Java 26.3, not even a preview. The newest build is OptiFine HD U K2 pre5 for 26.2, a preview from 20 October. The last full release is HD U J9 for 1.21.11. Want more fps or shaders on 26.3 today? Then use Sodium and Iris, on Fabric or NeoForge.
Below you’ll find the status per version, what you can use right now, how to get shaders, zoom and connected textures without OptiFine, and why none of this changes anything on your server. Checked for Java 26.3.
| Minecraft | Newest OptiFine | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 26.3 | No version yet | |
| 26.2 | HD U K2 pre5, 20 October 2026 | Preview, not for Forge |
| 26.1.2 | HD U K1 pre2, 22 June 2026 | Preview, not for Forge |
| 1.21.11 | HD U J9, 5 February 2026 | Release, works with Forge 61.0.8 |
Is OptiFine 26.3 out yet?
Not yet. Minecraft 26.3, the Wilderness Bound drop, came out on 15 September 2026. Six weeks later there’s still no OptiFine build for it. There’s no date either: optifine.net doesn’t announce one.
Searching for OptiFine 1.26.3? That version doesn’t exist. Since 2026, Minecraft numbers its releases by year and drop: 26.3 is the third drop of 2026. The last version with the old “1.” numbering was 1.21.11.
For 26.2 and 26.1.2 there are only previews. On the download page you only see them after you click + Preview versions under that Minecraft version. A preview is a test build. The changelogs of the 26.2 previews still list crash fixes in every build, and none of them works with Forge.
The past gives a rough idea, nothing more. Minecraft 26.2 came out on 16 June 2026, and the 26.2 previews on the download page now date from 15 to 20 October. So expect to wait for 26.3 too. That’s our observation, not a promise from the developer.
What you can use now
OptiFine packs a lot into one download: more fps, shaders, connected textures, dynamic lights, random mob textures, a zoom key and many extra video settings. On 26.3 you split that over separate mods. The core is Sodium for performance and Iris for shaders. Everything in this table has a build for 26.3 on Modrinth.
| From OptiFine | On 26.3 | Loader |
|---|---|---|
| More fps | Sodium 0.9.2 | Fabric, NeoForge |
| Shaders | Iris 1.11.7, which needs Sodium | Fabric, NeoForge |
| Connected textures | Continuity | Fabric |
| Dynamic lights | LambDynamicLights | Fabric, NeoForge |
| Random and custom mob textures | Entity Texture Features, plus Entity Model Features for models | Fabric, NeoForge |
| Zoom | Logical Zoom or Zoomify | Fabric (Zoomify also NeoForge) |
- Sodium 0.9.2 is the current full release for 26.3. A 0.9.3 beta is out too; stick to the release unless you like testing.
- Fabric API. On Fabric, Continuity, LambDynamicLights and Logical Zoom also need the Fabric API mod. Entity Model Features needs Entity Texture Features.
- Still missing: CIT Resewn, which shows the custom item textures from OptiFine resource packs, has no 26.3 build yet.
- Download safely. Get mods from a trusted site, see CurseForge vs Modrinth. How to put them in your game is in How to install Minecraft mods on Java.
Shaders without OptiFine
For shaders on 26.3 you use Iris. It loads shader packs made for OptiFine, as well as packs made for Iris, and it always runs together with Sodium. Iris supports Fabric and, from 1.21.1, NeoForge. It doesn’t support Forge.
- Get Iris and Sodium. The Iris installer from irisshaders.dev sets both up for you. You need Java to run it. You can also download both from Modrinth.
- Start the new profile in the Minecraft Launcher once.
- Add a shader pack. Go to Options, Video Settings, Shader Packs, click Open Shader Pack Folder... and drop the pack’s zip file in.
- Pick the pack in that same screen. Press K in the game to turn shaders off and on again.
Don’t put OptiFine next to Iris. According to the Iris team, OptiFine, Canvas and Vulkan mods are incompatible and crash the game. Picking a pack and fixing a slow one is explained step by step in How to install Minecraft shaders.
Zoom and connected textures
Many players mostly miss two small OptiFine features: the zoom key and connected textures.
- Zoom with a mod. Logical Zoom adds a single zoom key and nothing else. Zoomify gives you more settings, but needs a few more library mods.
- Zoom without a mod. Craft a spyglass: one amethyst shard above two copper ingots, in a column. Hold it up to look far ahead. It works on every server, also for friends on plain Minecraft.
- Connected textures. Continuity lets resource packs that use OptiFine’s connected textures format work without OptiFine. It also comes with its own pack that connects glass, sandstone and bookshelves, much like OptiFine does.
- Mob textures from packs. Entity Texture Features adds emissive, random and custom mob textures in the OptiFine way. Entity Model Features does the same for custom mob models.
Does it matter on a server?
No. OptiFine, Sodium and Iris are client mods: they change how your computer draws the world, not the rules of the game. Modrinth marks Sodium and Iris as needed on the client and not supported on the server. So you install nothing on your server. One friend can play with Sodium and Iris, another with OptiFine on a version that has it, and a third with plain Minecraft.
- The version has to match. Your game and the server need the same Minecraft version. With OptiFine on 1.21.11 or 26.2 you can’t join a plain 26.3 server. On Paper, the ViaBackwards plugin, together with ViaVersion, lets older clients connect to a newer server. Players on the older version do miss what’s new in 26.3.
- Render distance has a cap. The server decides how much of the world it sends you with
view-distance, 10 chunks by default. A higher render distance in Sodium or OptiFine won’t let you see further than that. - Server lag isn’t fps. If the world stutters for everyone at once, the cause is on the server side, not in your graphics settings. More fps on your PC won’t fix that.
