Minecraft 26.3 Wilderness Bound: what’s new, and is your server ready?

Published on 3 October 2026

Minecraft Java 26.3, the Wilderness Bound drop, came out on 15 September 2026. It’s an outdoorsy update: a new autumn forest full of poplar trees, abandoned camps with loot, straw beds and cushions you can actually sit on. If you run your own server, a couple of things change for you too: new servers now have the whitelist switched on by default, and not every plugin is ready for 26.3 yet.

Below you’ll find what’s new, what came out earlier this year, and when it makes sense to update your server.

Why is it called 26.3 and not 1.22?

Back in 2019 we wrote a news post about Minecraft 1.14, Village & Pillage, the update that brought foxes, pandas and pillagers. Minecraft counts differently now. In December 2025 Mojang announced a new version format: the year first, then the number of the drop within that year, plus an optional hotfix number. 26.1 was the first version to use it, which makes 26.3 the third drop of 2026. There will be no 1.22: 1.21.11 was the last of the old numbers.

What’s new in Wilderness Bound?

The dappled forest and poplar trees

The headline addition is the dappled forest, an autumn biome that generates near cold biomes. It’s full of poplar trees with red, orange or yellow leaves, red shrubs and shelf mushrooms that grow on the trunks like little ledges. You can even bounce on those mushrooms, much like a bed. Poplar also brings a full wood set, from planks and stairs to doors, signs and a boat.

Abandoned camps and treasure maps

Sixteen biomes, from meadows and forests to taiga, jungle, swamp and savanna, now hide abandoned camps, each styled to match its surroundings. Their chests hold explorer maps to things like other camps, trial chambers and ancient cities, and if you look carefully there’s a hidden copper chest too. Handy when your group wants an evening of adventure without wandering around for hours first.

Straw beds, cushions and new stairs

  • The straw bed lets you sleep through one night without changing your spawn point, and then it’s gone. Three hay bales give you four of them, but they won’t work in the Nether or the End.
  • Cushions come in sixteen colours and are crafted from wool slabs. Finally a place to sit without the old stairs-and-minecart trick.
  • Wool and concrete stairs and slabs now exist in all sixteen colours, which builders with a colour palette will love.

Smaller changes you’ll notice

Spectators can now travel through portals. New terrain generates faster, and finding structures with /locate is quicker too. Realm owners can invite friends with invite codes. Data pack makers get new commands such as /compute and /posteffect.

Playing Bedrock? Wilderness Bound arrived there on the same day, as version 26.50, and you can rent a Bedrock server for that too.

What came out earlier in 2026?

If you skipped a few versions, you also get the first two drops of the year:

  • 26.1, Tiny Takeover (24 March): baby mobs that didn’t have their own model got one, the golden dandelion arrived and name tags became craftable. Under the hood, Minecraft now needs Java 25 and stores every dimension in the dimensions folder of your world.
  • 26.2, Chaos Cubed (16 June): sulfur caves with the sulfur cube, a bouncy mob that swallows blocks, plus sulfur and cinnabar blocks, geysers and an in-game friends list.

Want to explore Wilderness Bound together? A Minecraft server from CakeHosting starts at €4.95 a month, and you choose which version it runs. See the Minecraft packages.

Should you update your server to 26.3 right away?

That depends on what runs on it:

  • Vanilla, no plugins or mods: go ahead.
  • Paper with plugins: as of 3 October 2026 the Paper builds for 26.3 are still experimental. If you want a quiet life, stay on 26.2 a little longer and check whether each plugin supports 26.3.
  • Bedrock friends joining through Geyser: Geyser currently connects as a 26.2 player and doesn’t support 26.3 yet. Hold off until it does, or add ViaVersion to your server so 26.2 players can still join a 26.3 server.
  • Mods or a modpack: wait until your mod loader and your mods have a 26.3 release.

Whatever you decide, make a backup first. A world that has run on a newer version won’t go back cleanly to an older one. The steps for switching versions are in Change your server version.

What changes on your server?

  • The whitelist is on by default. On a fresh 26.3 server, white-list in server.properties defaults to true. If a friend can’t join, add them with /whitelist add followed by their name. Existing servers keep whatever they had.
  • Java 25 is required. That has been the case since 26.1. Our servers pick the right Java version on startup, so there’s nothing for you to do.
  • New biomes only appear in new terrain. Chunks that already exist stay as they are. To find a dappled forest you’ll have to travel a fair way, or start a new world.
  • Memory. In 2019 we warned that 1.14 needed extra RAM. For 26.3 Mojang doesn’t list higher requirements, and new terrain actually generates faster. How much memory you need mostly depends on your players, plugins and mods.

Which server suits your group?

For a group of friends, our Standard line is usually plenty: solid hardware at a sharp price, with standard DDoS protection from the data centre. A Java server on Standard starts at €4.95 a month. If lots of people play at once, or you explore a lot of new terrain, Premium feels smoother: an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X or 9950X with fast single-core speed, plus DDoS protection through Cloudflare Magic Transit. Premium starts at €8.95 a month. The hardware per line and location is listed on specifications.

Not sure how much memory you need? The server size calculator works it out, and Standard vs Premium explains the difference without the jargon. Bring cake for the expedition.

Frequently asked questions

When was Minecraft 26.3 released?

On 15 September 2026. Wilderness Bound reached Bedrock on the same day, as version 26.50.

Why isn’t the update called 1.22?

Since 2026 Mojang numbers versions by year and drop, so 26.3 is the third drop of 2026. 1.21.11 was the last version with the old numbering.

Will the dappled forest show up in my existing world?

Only in terrain that hasn’t been generated yet. Existing chunks don’t change, so you’ll need to travel to unexplored areas or start a new world.

Does Geyser work with 26.3 yet?

As of 3 October 2026, Geyser supports Java 26.2 but not 26.3. If Bedrock friends join through Geyser, wait to update until Geyser supports 26.3, or run ViaVersion on your server.

Can I go back to 26.2 if something breaks?

Only by restoring a backup you made before the update. A world that has run on 26.3 can’t be taken back to an older version safely.
